Since its inception in 1982, the Foundation has played a leading role in underwriting the provision of pro bono services to the greater Fairfax community, educating and promoting the Rule of Law among our youth and providing the underprivileged the necessary tools to make the judicial system accessible to everyone. These important functions and the Foundation's other accomplishments would not be possible without the assistance and financial support of our legal community.

The First Hour Campaign is one of the Fairfax Law Foundation's primary fundraisers. We ask you, as practicing attorneys, to donate the value of one billable hour to help us underwrite the Foundation's pro bono and public service efforts.  Your contributions, and your time, make all the difference to the FLF's ability to promote the ideals of justice and community stewardship that we all believe in.

The Fairfax Law Foundation is excited to kick off this year’s First Hour Campaign! Watch this short video of the Foundation’s President, Heather Cooper, highlighting a feature of the campaign which enables donors to make their contribution in memory or in honor of someone who has had a legal impact on their legal career.  Please also find below the 2020-2021 campaign appeal letter:

Dear Colleague:

My first goal as the incoming President of the Fairfax Law Foundation is to ensure that everyone knows about the Foundation and one of its most important annual fundraisers – the First Hour Campaign, to answer “Frequently Asked Questions” about the campaign, and to explain why your contribution is so important.

What is the Fairfax Law Foundation?

The Fairfax Law Foundation is the charitable arm of the Fairfax Bar Association.  As a non-profit organization, the Foundation relies on the financial support of those in our legal community to promote equal access to the justice system and provide law-related education opportunities throughout the Fairfax County community.

What is the First Hour Campaign?

The First Hour Campaign is one of the Fairfax Law Foundation’s most important fundraisers.  Through this campaign, the Foundation asks each attorney to donate the value of just one billable hour to the Foundation.  It is that simple!

What are the funds used for?

Your donation will help to support the critical role that the Northern Virginia Pro Bono Law Center, funded by the Foundation, plays in our community.  The Foundation expects that the 2020-2021 fiscal year will be one of the most demanding for the Law Center as it attempts to provide pro bono legal services to the increasing pool of citizens in Fairfax County who are living at or below poverty level.  In addition, your donation will help the Foundation adapt its court tour program to the virtual classroom for the 2020-2021 school year, and support other law-related education efforts.

Times are tough for law firms.  Why should I donate now?

The core of the legal profession is the ability to help others in their time of need.  This may be one of the most critical years in the Foundation’s 38-year history in terms of helping our fellow citizens navigate, and educating our youth about, the justice system.  While there are many well-deserving organizations that are likely seeking your support at this time, please know that a contribution to the Fairfax Law Foundation will further the commitment that we all made as we entered the legal profession.

How can donations be made to the First Hour Campaign?

Simply fill out this donor card and return it to the Foundation, or click here to make an online donation.

Can I use the donation to honor someone?

Yes! Feel free to make your donation in honor of an attorney who has had a positive impact on your life or career, or in our community, by placing their name in the memo section of your check, in a note with your donation, or in the “donor comment” section of the online form.  Please also let us know if we may highlight your honored colleague on our social media pages!

I have made my contribution.  Will you please take a moment to join me in supporting the work of the Fairfax Law Foundation?

Sincerely,

Heather A. Cooper, Esq.

President
